3 Ways to Use Cannabis to Improve Fitness without Getting High
On Sunday October 20th, I attended the Civilized Games (formerly 420 Games) which is a series of athletic events highlighting Cannabis consumption as part of a balanced healthy lifestyle.
It may seem Counterintuitive that Cannabis can actually help you perform better in your workouts. However, that's mostly because of stereotypes and stigmas of "Potheads" sitting on the couch all day eating pizza.
However, healthy & productive people are utilizing Cannabis to enhance their performance, help with recovery, and improve fitness results.
The human body loves Cannabis. We have a natural Endocannabinoid System that is designed to work harmoniously with Cannabis. When Cannabis is used therapeutically, it can restore homeostasis within the body. To learn more about this, check out UCLA's research HERE.
It's understandable that some people don't want to get high or have an altered state. However, keep in mind that Caffeine and workout stimulants can have a very similar effect. Have you heard of Red Bull's mantra "Red Bull gives you wings!?"
There's also the fear of becoming addicted. I'll revert back to coffee and have worked with many clients who would rather die than give up their morning cup of Coffee.
Psst....coffee, workout stimulants, red bull, etc. they are all drugs too. Just socially acceptable drugs.
Cannabis is fascinating in that there are many ways to enjoy it's health benefits whether or not you want an altered state.
For the sake of this blog, we will only address how to enhance your fitness results without getting high (we'll add another blog for those that like to get high and want to use it for fitness in a later blog).
Topicals, Patches & Bath Bombs - After a hard workout, muscles need some TLC and THC (lol). Topicals are rubbed directly onto a spot where there is pain or soreness. I like to use topicals that have both CBD & THC. CBD helps reduce inflammation while THC help reduce pain. There are also transdermal patches available that provide relief for a prolonged period of time. There is no risk of getting high when THC is applied to the skin. I also love a good bath bomb before bed because it relaxes me for a good night sleep while also providing pain relief. Keep in mind that it may take some people time to "train" their Endocannabinoid system. Some people may not feel a difference immediately. It may take a few applications. Here are some of my favorite brands: Apothecanna Extra Strength, CBD Alive, Mary's Medicinals, and Papas & Barkley.
CBD Tinctures & Capsules - CBD has no psychoactive effect and will not alter your state. CBD can be taken anytime of day! It is helpful in post workout recovery because of it's ability to help reduce inflammation. Tinctures are consumed by placing a drop under the tongue and it goes directly into the blood stream. Capsules on the other hand can take longer as they must pass the digestive tract. I recommend purchasing Cannabis derived CBD products from legal dispensaries because of testing. Regulations are not the same on Hemp derived CBD products and can have different amounts compared to what is actually stated on the packaging. Be cautious of CBD drinks, there's been lots of articles published that the actual amount of CBD that's in drinks (specifically CBD Water) is not enough to have any effect. It's just trendy marketing. Products I recommend are PLUS CBD Gummies & Papas & Barkley.
20:1 Tinctures & Capsules - 20:1 is the ratio between CBD & THC. These products will have mostly CBD with only a minute amount of THC (not enough to make you feel high). I prefer this ratio over straight CBD because there are therapeutic benefits to THC specifically for pain relief. However, every body is different and some people find enough relief with CBD alone. If you tried CBD only for at least 30 days and felt no effects, consider changing to a 20:1. CBD Alive is a brand I love, use, and recommend. The capsules are time released and provide longer relief. I wrote about this brand in my blog post about Chronic Pain. These products will be most beneficial for recovery. Remember that recovery is vital for achieving better fitness results. Muscles need to repair and that's during recovery period. Sleep is ideal for recovery and consuming Cannabis with a small amount of THC (not enough to get you high) can also promote better sleep.
Whatever method you choose to explore, keep a journal as it will be beneficial to track your experience. Especially with something like CBD. It can take time to feel the difference. I like to use the app Releaf.
