Post Workout Recovery with CBD
It’s the beginning of the year when gyms are packed and diets are on point. Motivation is high!
What tends to happen when we’re that motivated? Perhaps going too hard on workouts? Muscles can get too sore and tired making it hard to get back to the gym.
Cannabis can be a part of everyday healthy living by incorporating it into our diet or using it topically. Especially when workouts are more intense, Cannabis can play a role in recovery by helping with pain & inflammation.
Cannabis CBD (the non-psychoactive ingredient) is often taken to help with inflammation whereas THC (the psychoactive ingredient) can be helpful for some people with pain management.
One of the best ways to consume Cannabis to help with pain management & inflammation is when it is taken orally in the form of an edible, tincture, or capsule. The reason is because it stays longer in the body providing longer relief. Plus, these products are often easier to determine proper dosing as they’re labeled with lab tested dosing information.
Topicals are also highly effective for more immediate relief. I use a Cannabis cream on my sore knees after I teach Zumba to help with the inflammation. It helps me recover after teaching so I can get back on stage the next day. Cannabis, when applied to the skin, has no psychoactive effect.
These items can add up in costs at around $20-$50 per package. In addition, the edibles that are on the market tend to be high in processed sugar and fat like cookies, brownies, and chocolate. Maybe not the best option if you’re watching your diet.
This is a big reason I like to make my own edibles at home. It is way more economical and I have control of the ingredients I use in my recipes. The only challenge is the dosing which is not as controlled as when it’s tested in a lab. If you’re using straight CBD, no problem, as you won’t feel any psychoactive effect. However, if you’re using THC than we’ll need to pay a little more attention.
One of my favorite “go to” post workout meals is oatmeal with peanut butter. After a workout, you want a balance of protein, fat, and carbs to help fuel muscle recovery.
Instead of using peanut butter, we’ll infused mixed nuts with Cannabis oil and add them into our oatmeal for a therapeutic healthy meal. You can also enjoy the nuts alone as a healthy snack. The fat from the nuts helps the body absorb more Cannabis as the cannabinoids are fat soluble.
To make the Cannabis oil, you can make a straight CBD oil, THC oil, or a combination of both. THC flower is much easier to find in dispensaries. To find CBD flower, look for brands like Henry's Original or CBD Alive.
A note on dosing: everyone's tolerance to THC is different and varies based on metabolism. If you're new to Cannabis THC, always start small. The 2 tablespoons used in this recipe will very on 5- 20 mg depending on how much THC content is in the flower you use.
